A Word from the Captain
I've always loved making films that are a little ridiculous. Whether it's pirates, cursed ships, or an unnecessarily complicated murder mystery, I enjoy building big, comedic worlds, but I also believe those worlds only work if they're grounded by something emotionally real. That's why every major character in A Murder, Ye Say? is based on someone in my own family, just with a significantly stronger desire to kill my grandfather. Pulling from real relationships, arguments, and personalities let me create a story that feels uniquely personal, even when everything happening on screen is completely absurd.
I've also fallen in love with the murder mystery genre because it challenges both the filmmaker and the audience. A good mystery has to earn every reveal while still giving viewers a fair chance to solve it themselves. That love of the genre pushed me to make a mystery of my own, and in the process I became fascinated by the often-overlooked relationship between pirates and British nobility. Most pirate stories focus on sword fights, treasure, and adventure, but I found myself drawn to the philosophical clash between people who live by complete freedom and people who live by tradition and rigid social rules.
More than anything, A Murder, Ye Say? is a love letter to my family, adventurous pirate films, and the murder mysteries that inspired me to make one of my own.
